His practice is informed by past and present narratives related to his upbringing and lived experiences in Botswana and South Africa. Makepe’s work is often resolved in the form of long-form projects that contain existing public and private archival materials, such as family photos, documentary screenshots, and newspaper articles. His approach to photography also employs a variety of photographic styles, including staged portraiture, documentary photography and re-enactments. In 2019, he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts with distinction, majoring in photography at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts at the University of Cape Town. In 2023, he was awarded the Foam Talent Award 2024-2025, and in 2024, he received the Prince Claus Seed Award. In 2025, he was selected to be a participant in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. Makepe’s work has been exhibited at the Foam Museum in Amsterdam and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in Frankfurt. Public collections featuring his work include the University of Cape Town Works of Art Collection and the University of Pretoria Art Collection. He is also a founding member of the Botswana Pavilion, a collective of young artists from Botswana dedicated to advancing Botswana’s creative development and artistic heritage. (2024) This body of work explores themes of nihilism, classism, and existentialism in my city of birth, Gaborone. I created this project in the lead-up to the 2024 Botswana general elections, which were characterized by youth angst and disillusionment with the current state of the economy and civil society in Botswana, which has been marred by corruption, economic inequality, and social exclusion. I aimed to create a series of staged tableaux, landscapes, and still-life images that illustrate the everyday social dread and marginalization experienced by Batswana. My photographic work is collaborative, involving my family and close friends who share their experiences, stories, and memories with me. As an artist, I interpret these narratives through my lens. While some images are highly staged or fictional, others are grounded in reality, featuring people I know personally in their everyday situations. In both instances, the subjects of my images serve as conduits for broader social contexts in Botswana, reflecting issues related to social class, gender, and age. Throughout this series of images, I aimed to create counter-propaganda that challenges the mainstream narrative of Botswana as a highly stable, democratic, and economically prosperous nation. The title of this project suggests that circumstances are unlikely to improve. In my visual work, I don’t aim to provide solutions; instead, I ask why things aren’t getting better, who is affected by this stagnation, and how those individuals cope with their circumstances. Ultimately, the way forward remains unclear; it is a mystery, and that ambiguity is central to my work. During pre-colonial Africa and even during the liberation struggles on the continent, people organized around collective goals. However, that sense of unity seems to have diminished. Today, issues are more individualized, leading to greater isolation and an increase in nihilism. I use duality as a tool to illustrate this crisis of individuality and class disparity. I want to explore what this phrase means for different people in different parts of the world and, in turn, how these people relate to me. The second volume is titled “Paradis En Enfer”. In February 2023, I was selected as the second recipient of the MEP - Maison Européenne de la Photographie – Collection Gervanne + Matthias Leridon – Cité internationale des arts residency. During my residency, I wanted to develop this work further by shifting my focus to the urban landscape in a big city like Paris. Specifically, I was interested in how the geography of the urban landscape here affects people’s psychology. Very early in my time in Paris, someone shared with me the quote, “France est un paradis peuplé de gens qui se croient en enfer/ France is a paradise populated by people who think they are in hell” by Sylvain Tesson. The Land of Honey Since October 2022, I have been working on a new body of work titled “The Powers that Be.” This phrase has constantly been present in my life, often accompanied by frustration and hopelessness. I want to explore what this phrase means for different people in different parts of the world and, in turn, how these people relate to me. The first volume is titled, “Basireletse Ba Noka (The River Protectors) &amp; The Land of Honey”. I took these images during “Whispers of the Wilderness”, the 2022 edition of Invisible Borders, a trans-African road trip. This road trip gave me my first opportunity to travel to the Okavango Delta in Botswana and Namibia. The images in this first volume are a result of a deep exploration of the different landscapes encountered during the trip, as well as the people who inhabit them. The aim was to uncover the undercurrents of local histories and experiences. However, the distance between myself and the locals was a constant challenge due to the cloud of tourism and socioeconomic privilege. To bridge this gap, I had to interrogate myself and establish a connection with the locals. Blending staged portraiture, documentary images and re-enactments, I weave personal family stories with national history. These images are part of a photobook (currently in development) that addresses the history of musicality and activism in my family lineage. In 1958, my grandfather, Hippolytus Mothopeng, fled South Africa to escape racist Apartheid law. He went to Botswana, a far more peaceful country under British protection that eventually achieved independence in 1966. He worked as a town clerk in Francistown and Gaborone and as a hobbyist jazz musician. In contrast, my grandfather’s uncle, Zephaniah Mothopeng, a teacher by profession, became an activist and joined the Pan-African Congress of Azania (PAC), eventually becoming the president of this political party. As a prominent leader of the struggle against Apartheid, my great-uncle Zephania Mothopeng served two separate jail sentences on Robben Island, the latter in 1979 for threatening to overthrow the government, for which he was sentenced to 15 years. The title of the project, “We Didn’t Choose to be Born Here”, is a phrase explored in the minds of different family members during crises, separation, and ennui. In my photobook, I also write about my own experiences with activism during the #FeesMustFall protests that took place at the University of Cape Town in 2016, fighting for free, decolonized education across all South African universities. Using various photographic languages, I have attempted to construct a non-linear narrative that shows my maternal family’s lasting kindredship despite all the effects of politics, resistance, history, migration, loss and separation they have endured for over half a century. Despite all these adversities, I also want the viewer or audience to take away a sense of hope, celebration, and triumphant accomplishment. 2018, Major Cliff Manyuni, a Botswana Defence Force (BDF) pilot, met his untimely death during a BDF Day rehearsal after steering a stricken fighter jet away from highly populated areas in Gaborone, thus saving many lives in the process.Although BDF protocol and public affairs officials declined interviews on the tragedy that preceded the annual army celebrations in 2018, his friends, colleagues and Batswana at large hailed the deceased, Major Cliff Manyuni, as a hero across all social media platforms.The photography I employed in this book consists of photos of a diorama that I carefully constructed and pictures from inside a large camera obscura where I manipulated light. Additionally, I used site-specific photographs in relation to the exact locations where the pilot began to lose control of his aircraft and where he ultimately lost his life.Fly machine is a colloquial phrase used by Batswana to describe any object of aviation, be it a jet, plane or helicopter. Mogaka is a Setswana translation of the word hero. In recent years, there have been conflicting reports on what the true cause of this tragic event was – the man or the machine.In this body of work, I aimed to explore the grey area between collective and personal memory and reality and imagination. Upon hearing this tragic news, I was immediately struck with a harsh reminder of my mortality and how quickly life can diminish. This book serves as a memorial and tribute to a man who sacrificed his life in a moment that required lightning-quick decision-making. In the practice of creating a book, I would like to slow time down to allow the viewer to ponder and appreciate the ultimate sacrifice made by this person for the greater good of his people.
